A large group of Puritans who had fled from England for religious reasons sailed on board. They became the founders of the first English colony in North America.

In 1630, a colony of the Massachusetts Bay appeared on the map, in the same year the city of Boston was founded. Migrants worked tirelessly. In 1636 Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, appeared in Cambridge, near Boston.

In the Civil War (1861-1865), Massachusetts took the side of the opponents of slavery, and at that time became one of the first states to admit African Americans.
